Things have gone wild in my life again, and when this happens I know it is time to reconnect with my teacher Siobhan. She has this gift of helping me clarify what I need to see about myself in order to move forward in a way that is deeply aligned with my Spirit.
Typically, when we struggle with something we move into grasping mode, as though we are trying to hold onto something in our clenched fist. This typically happens when we don’t want to let go, and it’s like the palm is facing down and if we don’t clench our fist we would drop whatever was in our hand.
Siobhan recommended that I try working with the Open Palm Meditation. With this meditation, the invitation is to sit with whatever you are working with (it could be a dream, desire or challenge), with your palms facing up instead of down. With an upward facing palm we can still hold whatever it is, and yet we don’t have to clench or tighten, we can practice relaxing and being with our dream/desire/challenge, instead of constricting around it. What this does is create space – space for digestion, for inspiration, for opportunity.
Using this technique I notice that I definitely get “clenchy”… basically my whole body gets tight and constricted as soon as my mind gets tight and constricted, which can happen when I get stressed or super excited. This practice has brought to my awareness how often I literally clench my fists, which has been a fascinating realization.
Now, as I go through my day, when I notice that I am clenching, I stop what I’m doing and I open my palms upward and take a few breaths to soften and relax around whatever is going on. I am amazed at how often I need to do this actually. It’s a great awareness.
It’s a simple technique, requires no equipment, and is effective at increasing our awareness. I invite you to give it a try. I would love to hear your experience – leave me a comment below!
Enjoy open palms!
