Naturopathic doctors are primary care licensed health professionals who integrate modern scientific knowledge and diagnostics with a broad range of natural therapies including medical nutrition, botanical medicine, lifestyle counseling, traditional Chinese medicine, and acupuncture. Treatments are chosen based on the individual patient, which includes their physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Referrals to other health practitioners will be made for the benefit of the patient, as needed.
The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body. By supporting organs and systems in the body, we support its ability to restore balance and heal. This approach is sometimes preferable to pharmaceutical or surgical intervention that addresses undesirable symptoms by circumventing or blocking the underlying cause instead.
Some of the conditions treated by Naturopathic Doctors include:
Digestive concerns, such as acid reflux, IBS, Crohn’s Disease, colitis, constipation, and food intolerances
Chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia, and Lyme Disease
Chronic pain such as arthritis and headaches
Stress induced illness and weight management
Respiratory complaints, such as allergies, asthma, colds and flus
Depression, anxiety, and ADHD
Hormone concerns, such as PMS, menopause, and thyroid disease
Skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne
Heart disease, high cholesterol, blood pressure
To become a Naturopathic Doctor in Ontario, students must successfully complete an undergraduate degree that includes pre-medical sciences, successfully complete a 4-year full-time professional program at an accredited school of Naturopathic Medicine, pass multiple sets of comprehensive North American-wide board examinations and Ontario licensing examinations, and meet the Continuing Education requirements to maintain their licensure on an ongoing basis.
