In the early 80’s, you could often find me carrying a heavy video camera around on my right shoulder while working for Portland Public Access TV in Oregon, or portaging a canoe in Algonquin Park. By the late 80’s, I was a pro at multitasking: with one of my twins settled onto my right hip, I would help the other get their jacket on while heading out the door to daycare.
Fast forward: replaying my movement habits for years in my professional life, you’d see me sitting for hours at meetings – right leg crossed over left. Or you might see me dependably ultra focused (hunched) over a computer, or driving for hours in a snowstorm on my way from St. Louis to Columbia Missouri.
You get it. I’ve lived a life — not so glamorous, but full (no regrets!) — and, no surprise, in my early 50’s I found myself tight and rather hunched across my shoulders, particularly on the right side. As the biotensegrity masterpieces we are, this influenced my entire posture from head to toe.
My body has served me well, but it became obvious that if I was going to live and move the way I want to as long as possible, I had to change my movement patterns.
Enter: Yoga Tune Up®
Taking yoga classes became a regular part of my life. I was checking out different classes in Brooklyn, NY where I lived when I discovered a yoga class taught by a Yoga Tune Up® instructor. I stuck with this class.
It immediately gave me a boost of both physical relief and always left me feeling super energized.
If I could fit it in, I would stay for another yoga class afterwards relishing the inner strength I was discovering (yup, physical and energetic) as I nudged myself back into health. That yoga community and & Yoga Tune Up® definitely played an inspirational role as I shape shifted my life to Canada.
Now a RYT 500, Certified Yoga Tune Up® Instructor, I get to share what I am learning with others.
In my Yoga Tune Up classes, we use Roll Model® Therapy Balls, soft-tissue conditioning tools that give us the power to target muscles that feel tight because they are overworked, under-worked (stiff from lack of use) or misused (being asked to do something they were not designed to use). This bodywork brings immediate relief.
But that is not all. My classes start with time for overall unwinding, physically and energetically. Then we roll and we move in accessible ways to help heighten your body-intuitive skills, your body awareness. You too will gain access to new strength and learn how to move better in your body on a daily basis.
