Garshana is a great technique to exfoliate dry skin from the body and to support lymphatic stimulation. Since our lymphatic system does not have its own pump, it can use all the support we are able to provide.
Dry brushing is done with a natural bristled brush or raw silk gloves before taking your shower or bath, and before abhyanga (oiling). The entire body benefits from this technique. Kapha body types will benefit from garshana daily or every other day. Pitta body types can garshana weekly. If your skin tends towards dryness, more often will be helpful – Vata types will garshana more in the winter than in the spring for example. If your lymphatic and circulatory systems tend to be sluggish, more often will be helpful.
As for technique, use “up and down” strokes over the long bones of the legs and arms, and over the torso. Use circular strokes over the joints, breasts, and any harder to reach places. Remember to include the underarms, abdomen, low back, and inner thighs – as these are areas rich in lymph nodes. Be gentle with dry or aging skin, as well as with the face and genital regions.
Enjoy!
