Everyone seems to be on a quest for happiness these days. Thankfully, more and more people are beginning to recognize their innate desire to be happy. As all of the “happiness seekers” come out in search of guidance, I personally try and bring it back to one simple thing. Gratitude. The act of showing appreciation for the life we live and all of the beauty that the world blesses us with.
I have been keeping a gratitude journal (off and on) for about 14 years, maybe even longer. It has become my go to nightly ritual. It sits beside my bed, the pages ready to be filled with lists or stories of all of my blessings. I also collect pictures, quotes, song lyrics and drawings that I find moving, and fill the spaces in between my writings, creating a beautiful piece of art just for myself.
As the years have passed, I have really begun to notice the positive effects that keeping a gratitude journal has. As I mentioned, the entries have at times been few and far between. When they have been consistent and focused, I have noticed an elevation in my mood, my desire to show up in the world and do all that I can to support my community, and in my ability to demonstrate loving kindness. It’s true, the simple act of writing down all of the things you are grateful for can have a magical effect on your entire life. It’s no wonder that this has also been a strategy I have brought into my professional life as well. I will never forget the time I asked a young lady to write out 10 things she was grateful for. After we finished the activity, she looked somewhat amazed and said ” I can’t believe how much lighter I feel”. That was all it took for her to turn her day around.
If you too are a “happiness seeker” and have yet to try this activity, I challenge you to give it a go. Even for a month, so you can see for yourself the effortless way it can help shape your days. Everyday for 30 days, take some time morning or night to go over the blessings you have been given and write down what you are grateful for and why. You can even get your kids involved by giving them their own journal and having them draw what it is they are grateful for. In doing so, I hope that you slowly begin to find more and more beauty and love in your everyday.
After learning firsthand the impact that yoga can have on your life, Olivia knew she wanted to explore this path further. Over the years, she absorbed as much information as she could. In 2013, she took the Street Yoga teacher training in hopes of being able to offer more to the youth she serves through her role as Youth Worker. This training left her wanting more. When the opportunity came to do the teacher training, she knew she could not pass it up.
Olivia is a mom to two boys, and because of them she wants to make the world a beautiful place. She strives to lead by example, and do her best to maintain a yogic lifestyle. She has dedicated a large portion of her life to empowering others, especially some of our most vulnerable members of society. It is her hope, that she can help others find their authentic selves. Olivia believes we all have an important role to play and that being able to bring her passion for life and yoga to a greater audience is her own contribution to society.
